I am not as pessimistic as you. The challenge is that the level of corruption and seditious behavior exhibited by Trump is unprecedented for an ex-president. The Justice Department has been moving slowly and deliberately to make sure that its case is airtight. There is also the political consideration of the reaction of his base if he is in fact indicted and convicted. I think political worries have a lot to do with the slow pace. As he loses more and more support even from Fox News, and otherwise extreme Republicans, the risk of a significant civil disturbance is reduced. There are already obvious cracks among his base of supporters. The fractures will get larger as time goes on. Once he is essentially friendless, I believe that the DOJ will do its duty and try and convict him.
