I completely agree with your observations. Some of my happiest times in the church were when I was involved in ministries telling people how loved and valued they were by God. Exactly the opposite of the message this young man was conveying in his singing.

I did spend enough time with Evangelicals to hear and internalize the message of utter sinfulness and worthlessness that is so prevalent in Bible based churches. I probably was not programmed to the same degree as children who grew up in such an environment, because my background was with mainstream protestant churches.

Nevertheless, it is hard to totally forget the message. There are times even today when those echoes come back, and I question what I am doing, and whether it is enough for God to accept me. I don’t think we ever fully overcome the ingrained doubt we have about our unworthiness. There are a lot of similarities to the survivors of severe abuse, like rape victims. You can be healed, but the scars remain forever.
