I recently wrote a lengthy response to a rather dismissive post by another fundamentalist discussing exactly this. Ancient Hebrews used a literary device called a merism to describe a whole panoply of things. When they talked about people being made male and female in God’s image, what they were really saying is that God made people male on one extreme and female on the other and everything in between. A veritable rainbow of possibilities reflecting the true nature of God. It is similar to language we use today when we say that something is neither black nor white, but shades of gray. That is a fair approximation of how the Hebrews wrote about extremes. Ancient Hebrews understood the true intent and meaning. Modern fundamentalists are clueless, but then they really do not want to understand the true nature of God. Instead, they are looking to the Bible as an unassailable authoritative text to justify their narrowminded bigoted attitudes. They should be careful what they wish for. They just may find that God’s standards are the opposite of what they so fervently believe.
