I think your analogy is very apt. I had never thought about it before, but I have always taken a centered Church approach. I have worshipped and done mission work with virtually every expression of Christianity there is, including Plymouth Brethren, Mormons, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. What drew me uniformly to the groups with which I became involved were the peoples’ dedication to the idea of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and helping and supporting the marginalized and the poor. Doctrinal differences never entered into the equation. They existed of course, but were unrelated to our core message and what motivated the ministries. if more Christians would understand what Jesus was trying to say in the example of his life, Christianity would be a much more powerful force in our modern world, instead of increasingly being despised by many.
