In addition to the fundamentalists misunderstanding of the cultural context of Paul’s comments regarding homosexuality, there is also a total misunderstanding of the meaning of fornication. Modern Christian writers describe it as a relationship outside of marriage. What they ignore is the root of the word. It comes from the Greek fornix, meaning brothel. The condemnation was of sex for money because it was considered dehumanizing. Relationships between loving couples were never intended to be part of the condemnation. So much misunderstanding by the evangelicals because of plain old bigotry. They use a book which says nothing about the behavior to condemn things that even in biblical times were considered acceptable in the eyes of God. What a distortion! And we are still paying as a society for this ignorance.
