That was the point in my comment. There is a link which may or may not be causatively related between autism and people thinking they are transgender, especially among the younger Transmasc population, which has been noted by certain practitioners. That is the reason it is currently being re-examined. There seems to be a higher incidence of transition regret among this group. Researchers are trying to figure out if being autistic can lead people to mistakenly believe they are transgender. That is why careful practitioners are more thorough with this particular part of the population and why they are currently being examined more carefully. I don’t think anyone fully understands what the connection is, if any. Most of the current evidence is anecdotal.
As to using transgenderism or autism, those were intended to be descriptive terms in common usage, not scientific definitions. When talking about the autistic community as a whole, most people use the term neurodivergent. However, this is too broad for the group that is being carefully examined. They seem to have classic autistic tendencies, rather than some of the other variants of this bigger community.
