The sentence you highlighted jumped out at me as well. The populist movement of this country with its autocratic instincts is a distinct threat to democracy. My only hope is that the majority of Americans who reject it will turn up and vote. I am worried that the extremist elements of the Republican party will take over and federalize the punitive legislation being adopted in too many states. These are truly scary times.
