Well stated. I find your mention of the Baha’is to be particularly telling. They are the one religious group which has as a core belief the acceptance of the idea that every religion has something to say about the nature of God. It is perhaps the most tolerant faith tradition in this regard.

Religion is at its purest when it respects the right to exist of every other creature. When it is used to provide a sense of ultimate authority to control the actions and beliefs of others, it ceases to be an inspiration raising the human spirit and becomes an instrument of hatred and oppression.

If I have a problem with your particular religious beliefs, it may not be due to lack of tolerance but because your faith has become so tainted by the worst of human instincts that any positive aspects it may embody are hopelessly absent. I am Christian but I utterly reject the bigoted and self-righteous standards of too many fundamentalist evangelical Christians. Their intolerance totally subsumes the purity of the message of love embodied in the life of Jesus. Likewise I have many Muslim friends who are some of the kindest and most generous people I know. Yet the radical militant jihadists of the faith which are waging war against infidels (meaning anyone who does not believe like them), are a very real and persistent danger. I utterly reject their belief system as a mechanism of oppression against all who are unfortunate enough to live under their control. Their oppressive theocratic standards suppress and denies the humanity of the groups which they govern.

I agree that if I reject your religious beliefs simply because mine is different, the problem is probably with me. But if your beliefs seek to control and deny my humanity, the problem is with you. There is a difference.
