You fail to understand the larger strategic implications. China, North Korea, Iran and many other autocratic regimes around the world are closely watching Ukraine to see what the final outcome will be. If Putin can get away with his blatant landgrab and nuclear blackmail, the international order will become more unstable. It is already bad enough. Containing Putin and putting him back in his box is the best way to reestablish peace around the globe. And this totally ignores the right of the Ukrainians to live in peace without the horrors that have been inflicted upon them by a psychopathic despot.
No one in the West wanted or sought this war. Its consequences are being felt every day in terms of higher fuel costs, supply chain disruptions and soaring inflation. All of us would have much preferred to have maintained the peace. But when regimes decide to be belligerent for no other reason than delusional sociopathic imperialistic ambitions, they often start wars of conquest.
What is the world to do? Roll over and placate the aggressor? No one wants war. Everyone in the West would like to see it end as quickly as possible. This cannot be done by rewarding Putin‘s aggression however. A reasonable opening for negotiation would be for him to withdraw to the border as it existed in 2014 and stop threatening his neighbor. This is something he would never do. It would require accepting the humiliation of defeat. His regime would never survive.
Because the war does not directly affect us here in the US, you cavalierly discount the freedom and security of people you don’t know and care about, oblivious to the dangerous precedent giving Putin even a small victory would represent. Some of us do know the ramifications and do care.
