You misunderstand a lot. Ukraine’s support of Pakistan in 1999 was when it was a vassal state of Russia with a puppet government controlled by the Kremlin. The pictures you see of Russians helping Indian medical students and Ukrainians treating them badly are propaganda from the Kremlin propaganda machine. To say that NATO is no longer necessary is to ignore the fact that Russia has always been aggressive and imperialistic. The current war, and the conflicts in Chechnya in Georgia and Crimea, just confirm Russia’s continued aggressive tendencies. It is the necessary means of defense for more peaceful countries. It is hardly obsolete. Not to support Ukraine is to support a madman with imperialistic ambitions. He will never cease until he is stopped. There is no negotiating with him. If he were to prevail in Ukraine, it would demonstrate the power of nuclear blackmail to other countries who will likely use the same strategy in their territorial ambitions. These include China, North Korea, Iran, and others for sure. It may even embolden countries like Pakistan to prey on their weaker neighbors. Do you really want such a destabilized world? Ukraine currently is swiftly moving towards a peaceful democratic government. It is not perfect, but it is a lot better than it was during the times that you try to compare it to. It deserves the world’s support.
