Your article is naïve at best and delusional at worst. You have no understanding of the self-inflicted wounds Russia has caused itself. Its bellicose leader has been threatening the west for decades. He considered the collapse of the Soviet union in 1991 to be the greatest catastrophe to ever befall the nation and has imperialistic ambitions to re-create a great empire that really never was.

We tried hard to bring Russia into the league of friendly nations years ago. There was even talk of creating an alliance between Russia and NATO. Now NATO is cast as the aggressive enemy and Russia as the victim. Nothing could be further from the truth. NATO was created precisely because of the fear of Russian hegemony after the second world war. Stalin had similar ambitions to what Putin envisioned today. Indeed, Putin greatly admires Stalin. He was a brutal dictator who killed tens of millions of his people, reduced the population to abject poverty and forced them to live under an oppressive and often brutal political system which gave them virtually no rights as a free people.

Other commentators have summarized the assistance and investment that was given Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Rather than using it to better the country, a small group of corrupt oligarchs essentially stole everything to promote their lavish lifestyles. Nothing changed for the average Russian. No one wants to see Russia fail, but it is up to them to make the decision to move forward in a positive way.

The west is not the aggressor. Russia is. All of this could be over very quickly if Putin would just respect the borders established by the 1994 Budapest accord and remove his troops from Ukrainian territory. He will never do this. And that is the real problem.

As to winning support for Ukraine, western and world support has never been stronger. Huge sums of money are being spent to provide Ukraine with sufficient means for its military defense. This commitment is even stronger than when Putin‘s war began. Here in the US, even the formerly reluctant Republican party which suggested we should cut off funding to Ukraine, has come around to a consensus that we need to continue to support them.

There is always a fear and possibility that the political winds will shift. But at the moment the resolve of the world to support Ukraine could not be stronger. We all hope that they succeed in their defense of their sovereign territory, and that they continue to become a more democratic regime. Once upon a time under puppet governments installed by Putin, the country was corrupt. In recent years, they have done a lot to clean up the problems created. They are quickly becoming a modern democracy, and it is in the interests of the world to make sure they succeed. That will not be accomplished by casting them aside to Russian hegemony. Everyone knows that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, other neighboring countries will be next. Articles like yours are not helpful because they demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of the history and the current geopolitical considerations. Please educate yourself before writing about things of which you seem to have little knowledge.
