Your opening premises are incredibly dangerous. Those with cancer and AIDS are exactly the groups that most need vaccination. Those conditions often result in compromised immune systems. The Covid vaccines are not intrinsically more dangerous to them. They are only contraindicated in a very, very small group of people who have had negative reactions to a vaccine component. To paint such a large group with a broad brush is disingenuous and badly mistaken.
I have several friends who have had, or are currently being treated for, cancer, including a particularly close one who has a recurrence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and he is not only vaccinated, he is ultra cautious around others since the vaccination will not work as well on him as those with uncompromised immune systems. He had to wait several months after stem cell therapy for his immune system to rebound enough to even be eligible. Even with the vaccine, his risk for a severe, perhaps fatal, infection is much higher than with a normal individual. Quite simply the immune response is not as great with those who are immunocompromised, but it is still worthwhile to provide as much protection as possible. A good example of the limited efficacy is Colin Powell. He was fully vaccinated, but also was being treated for multiple myeloma and had a compromised immune system. Unfortunately he died of complications due to Covid, which were unrelated to the vaccination and likely due to suppressed immunity. To suggest that cancer (past or present) or AIDS are legitimate accommodations to ask for an employer to allow you to remain unvaccinated , is not legitimate. Stating otherwise is irresponsible. GBS is a little more complicated, but the original guidance originated from an intense vaccination push associated with the 1976 swine flu outbreak. There was some indication that the vaccine slightly increased the risk of GBS (approx. 1 in 100,000) but ongoing research established that the risk of GBS by those who contracted swine flu was 17 in 1 million, while those who had been vaccinated was 1 in a million. These statistics also do not take into account the very different mRNA technology associated with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and use of reagents far less likely to create an allergic or other adverse response. There is enough misinformation floating around out there without adding yet another piece of misinformation to provide ammunition to the rabid anti-VAXers who are endangering the health of the rest of us. Please be more careful in your discussions.
