Your solution is naïve at best and dangerous at worst. The west did not provoke Russia. Ukraine was never going to be a part of NATO until Russia invaded it. It is the fear of Russia that has led to the expansion of NATO at the request of the neighboring countries who feared Russia’s imperialistic ambitions. If Russia were to remove themselves from Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, the war would be quickly be over. The problem is not with the west, but with Russia’s intransigence in doing the right thing. Putin has made it clear that he will never relinquish territory back to Ukraine. It is his obstinence that perpetuates the conflict. You couldn’t be more wrong.
